SABAP2: Atlas Workshops/Presentations

BirdLife South Africa and the Animal Demography Unit are currently conducting bird atlas workshops around the country to provide observers and potential atlasers with the opportunity to learn more about the in's and out's of SABAP2. The workshops, which usually run for half a day, aim to cover the following aspects:

1. Atlasing protocols (how's and why's of carrying out an atlas survey)
2. Map reading (what are pentads and how to determine them from topographical maps)
3. Using the Data Management Software (capturing, storing and submiting data electronically)
4. Using paper forms (how to complete the Field Data Sheets)
5. Field work (carrying out a trial atlas survey in the field)

Thirteen workshops were conducted during 2007 and more are being planned for 2008. Please refer to the schedules below. If you would like to attend or find out more information about an upcoming workshop please contact the corresponding facilitator - Neil Smith (Tel. 082 859 3788) or Doug Harebottle (Tel. 021 650 2330).

A big thank you to the Mazda Wildlife Fund for providing a Mazda 4x4 Double-cab to Neil which allows him to travel around the country to present these workshops and spread the SABAP2 message.
