Below is an example of the 1:50 000 topographical maps that you will require when conducting an atlas survey. The area covered by these maps represented the survey area for SABAP1 (approx. 27km x 23km). These maps are referred to as Quarter-Degree Grid Cells (QDGCs) as they cover an area of 15 minutes of longitude x 15 minutes of latitude. Thus a one-degree grid cell comprises 16 QDGCs.
For SABAP2 the survey area has been reduced to pentad grid cells (approx. 8km x 7km). These are shown on the map below where lines have been drawn for every 5 minutes of latitude (i.e South) and five minutes of longitude (i.e. East). There are nine pentads per QDGC, and a 144 per one-degree grid cell.
