Atlasing expedition to Mareetsane in North West Province from 27 April to 1 May 2012

Mateetsane North West Province

There will be an atlasing expedition in North West Province from 27 April to 1 May 2012. The bash will be in the vicinity of Mareetsane which is a small town southwest of Mafikeng. There are numerous unatlased pentads in this area and also lots of pentads with only a single checklist.

So we can make a massive contribution to the atlas effort in this area. We will be staying at Vaalboskraal (GPS: 26°08.891S, 25°25.226E). It is marked with a star on the map abobe. The entire facility is booked for us – so if we can get enough participants we will have the whole camp to ourselves! Apparently the birding at the farm is also pretty good! There are several accommodation options: · Camping at R60 pppn · Self catering chalets with communal ablutions: Adults R240 pppn sharing · Self catering en suite chalets R275 pppn sharing

Ernst Retief, who will be leading the event says: "As with other bashes maps will be provided at the venue and I will also co-ordinate atlasing while travelling to the venue and back. There is a lapa where we will meet each evening, have a braai, socialize, share sightings and plan the atlasing effort for the next day. Please note this is an atlasing expedition and that is the focus of everything we do! Atlasers need to make provision for their own food, etc. My role is to assist with co-ordinatiion, especially the atlasing effort.

"For more info about the venue please see this document [160kb].

"Please book directly with Thea du Rand, who will handle all bookings and payments. You will need to make a deposit and pay the rest of the amount at the venue (no credit cards!). Contacted Thea at 082 888 :9277 or vaalboskraal@eject.co.za. Please indicate to her if you would be willing to share a room or a chalet if we are too many (I am optimistic!). Please also let me (email conservation.gauteng@birdlife.org.za know that you will be attending (and also let me have your ADU observer number) and if you will be staying for the whole period or only a part. Day visitors are allowed but you will need to pay a day visitors fee (R40 pppd).

Previous bashes have been a fantastic success and great fun! So please consider joining us and in this way make a contribution to bird conservation.
