The Deep and Wide Winter Challenge: 1 June–31 July

The SABAP2 Winter Challenge has two categories. Deep and Wide. The Deep Winter Challenge encourages you to do repeat visits to well atlased pentads. The Wide Winter Challenge encourages you to travel far and wide to unatlased pentads.

In the Deep Winter Challenge, the rules are simple. The number of points you get for submitting a checklist is the number of checklists received for the pentad. So if you submit the first checklist for a pentad, you earn only one point in the Deep Winter Challenge, but if you submit the 50th card for a pentad, you get 50 points! But if you submit what you think is the 50th card for the pentad, but you have held onto it for so long that it really was the 19th card to be made for the pentad, you get only 19 points.

For the Wide Winter Challenge, there are 25 points for each different pentad you do in a degree cell which was blank on 1 June, 15 points for each different pentad you do in a half-degree grid cell which was blank on 1 June, 10 points for each different pentad you do in a quarter-degree grid cell which was blank on 1 June, and 5 points for doing each pentad which was blank on 1 June.

There will be separate leaderboards for the winners in the Wide Category and in the Deep Category. At the very end we will have the Deep-and-Wide Category, for which the totals in the other two categories will be multiplied together.

If you are tempted to become a bit too competitive, remember this. We are all part of the same team.

Watch out for the Early-Early Summer Challenge, starting 1 August!
